THE HARAR HYENA EXPERIENCE

> Where does the experience take place?

Ethiopia

When you think of Ethiopia, you’ll no doubt be inundated with mental images of extreme famine and poverty set against an infertile and unforgiving desert landscape ravaged by war. Put the preconceptions aside, however, and you’ll discover a colourful nation that stands apart from every other country on the African continent.

The only African country to have resisted colonisation, Ethiopia is also one of the oldest in the world with scientists declaring it to have been the beginning of mankind thanks to the discovery of the 3.5 million year old fossils from ‘Lucy’, the first human being on record. Bordering Kenya, Somalia and Sudan, Ethiopia rests on a plateau at 2,500 metres above sea level and boasts staggering landscapes rich in  natural beauty with gushing waterfalls and winding rivers set amongst fertile highlands and the flat-topped peaks of the vast Simien Mountains. This wild paradise is fused together with ancient civilisations and historical treasures like the awe-inspiring rock-hewn churches of Lalibela and the fascinating lost tribes of the Omo Valley to create a remarkable country that astounds and overwhelms visitors in equal measure.

If it’s a luxury getaway you’re after then look elsewhere. Not for the feint-hearted, exploring Ethiopia can be challenging and will almost certainly push you to the edge of your comfort zone. But come prepared with an open heart and mind and you’ll be rewarded with some of the most extraordinary experiences of your lifetime and will come to know the true essence of adventure.

Oh and the outstanding coffee, of course. Don’t forget the coffee.

Harar

Set in the east of Ethiopia nearing the border with Somaliland, the ancient city of Harar is a capsule of colour and culture, so different from the rest of the country and indeed from anything you’ll have seen before.

Inside the crumbling city walls lies a warren of twisting alleyways bursting with colour, exotic smells and the sounds of daily life. Packed with mosques, markets and colourfully robed locals, Harar reminds us of what Morocco must have been like centuries ago. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006, the city is also Islam’s fourth holiest city with its 82 mosques and 102 shrines.

Harar isn’t a place you’ll forget in a hurry and that’s without mention of the hyena encounters that take place outside the walled city when dusk falls and the ancient hyena men call their wild friends to feed.

THE HARAR HYENA EXPERIENCE

> When does the experience run?

September to April.

Like much of the rest of Africa, Ethiopia experiences wet and dry seasons which in turn impacts the period of travel. Rainy season in the north of Ethiopia runs from June through to mid-September during which time around 1,000 to 1,600 litres of rain falls per square metre transforming dusty roads into muddy tracks that make travel here rather unpleasant. As such, we only run the Harar Hyena Experience from the end of the wet season and throughout the dry season which runs from September through to April.

> When is the best time to travel?

September

The period just after the rainy season means mild temperatures and a more lush environment. That being said, if the rains have arrived late there is a certainly a heightened chance of rainfall but nothing too dramatic.

October, November & December

A lovely time to visit Harar and the east of Ethiopia. The weather is drier and cooler after the rains with warm daytime temperatures and cool evenings.

January, February, March & April

These are the driest months of the season with warm daytime temperatures that can range from 25 C all the way up into the thirties. As the region is lower lying the climate is more arid and temperatures hotter.

> When are the experience dates?

[One Half]

The calendar on the right shows exactly when the Harar Hyena Experience trips are available throughout the season. As well as displaying which trip dates are fully booked or available, the calendar also highlights specific dates that have been discounted or are on special offer.

Once you’ve decided on the dates you’d like to travel, head over to the HOW tab and fill out the enquiry form with all the required details. Once submitted, we will get back to you with confirmation and/or next steps within 24 hours.

THE HARAR HYENA EXPERIENCE

> Why do you recommend this experience?

The Hyena Feeding

Each evening as darkness shrouds the ancient city of Harar, the famous ‘hyena-men’ take to the streets to call for their wild friends. After minutes of their haunting calls, the loping tread and bright eyes of the hyenas materialise behind the darkness. It is here that the hyena-men begin to feed the animals from sticks laden with fresh meat extended from their mouths or above their heads where the hyenas mount their backs to prize their dinner from human hands. There is nothing quite like the experience of witnessing this extraordinary interaction and even getting involved yourself. Trust us, you’ll never do anything quite like this.
