Enjoy a once in a lifetime stay at Transylvania’s Ice Hotel and absorb some of Romania’s most picturesque medieval towns on a whirlwind adventure spanning just a few days. After one night in the vibrant capital city of Bucharest, guests are whisked away into the heart of rural Romania through the plains of the Transylvanian countryside visiting the decadent Peles Castle on the way. In Brasov, enjoy a leisurely stroll around charming cobbled streets, stopping to warm up in one of the town’s bohemian cafes dotted along snow-dusted alleyways off the main square. Or choose to unravel history on an informative walking tour taking in the Black Church and even the narrowest street in Europe!

Drift through the clouds as you ascend the Faragas Mountains by cable car up to the magical Ice Hotel past snow-capped peaks and frosty forestland. Once you’ve chosen your snow suite or igloo and explored the fairytale hotel of ice, get your heart racing with some snow-activities like sledging and snowmobiling or simply kick back with a hot drink and just enjoy the sunshine, snow and scenery. In the evening, brace yourselves for dinner ‘on ice’ with a four-course meal at the world’s first and only Ice Restaurant complete with ice plates, frozen tables and frosty, fur-lined chairs before enjoying an evening at the Sub Zero Ice Bar then tucking yourselves into cosy sleeping bags before braving the night in your ice-suite.

Defrost the next morning before exploring the spooky corridors of Dracula’s would-be residence, the forbidding Bran Castle. Then it’s back to Bucharest for a final night amongst the capital’s buzzing bars and restaurants.

Unique. Magical. An absolute must.

The Country

Ask most people what comes to mind when they think of Romania and you’re likely to hear something along the lines of Dracula, vampires and gypsies. Yes, the spooky castles pitched on rocky hilltops are certainly vampire-worthy but the only real fangs you’re likely to be exposed to here are those belonging to the wild bears, wolves and lynx that roam the Carpathian Mountains. Once you place the stereotypes aside for a moment, you’ll soon understand how misunderstood, overlooked and vastly underestimated this country is.

From the untouched Transylvanian countryside and the beautiful mountain scenery in the Carpathian Mountains, the wooden churches and painted monasteries of Maramures and the medieval towns of Brasov, Sibiu and Sighisoara, to the Danube Delta’s abundance of birds and wildlife, and the magnetic buzz of the fast-paced capital of Bucharest, the variation and contrast across Romania is staggering.

Of course, there’s far too much to see in just one visit but here’s what to expect from Romania…

Imagine introducing a Communist dictator to Paris for 15 years, add an earthquake for good measure and you’ll end up with something similar to what you have in Bucharest. Fortunately much of Bucharest’s past beauty still remains and you’re likely to find it with every wrong turn you make. It’s a city full of surprises and it’s this contrast that makes it such a fascinating place to explore.

At first glance the city might seem a little run down with remnants of its communist past on full view, however when you look a little closer and scratch beneath the surface it is a city of stunning contrast. In fact, it is the contrast that we love so much about Bucharest, its towering communist blocks sitting right next to the most beautiful buildings showcasing wonderful examples of belle époque architecture.

You’re also likely to notice a few things other things in Bucharest — cars and dogs! Romania’s capital has an abundance of both. The latter being a sad after effect of Nicolae Ceausescu’s programme of systematisation, where he methodically moved families from their houses to purpose built communist blocks and often household pets had to be left behind.  A lot of people seem to be intimidated or put off by Bucharest, but if you can get past preconceptions you might find yourself pleasantly surprised!

All of our Bucharest hotels are based in the old district of Lipscani (pronounced locally as Lip-scan), which is the beating heart of the city and our favourite place to wine and dine in the evenings. There are tons of quaint eateries and buzzing bars, you just need to get yourself lost amongst the historic backstreets or follow our recommendations for the best places to grab a bite or a few drinks.

Nestled in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains and known as the gateway into Transylvania, the medieval Saxon town of Brasov is an absolute gem. A world away from the lively buzz of the capital city, Brasov provides the perfect base for exploring the Transylvanian countryside with its rural villages, fortified churches and thick forests as well as the infamous Bran Castle, would-be residence of mysterious Count Dracula.

Set against a beautiful mountain backdrop and rich in clean fresh air, the pace of life in Brasov’s Old Town is noticeably slower and more relaxed than in Bucharest and is the ideal location for those who prefer to take in the atmosphere at a leisurely pace, ambling around the cobbled streets, stopping for a hot drink in one of the clusters of quaint cafes or heading to a cosy restaurant for lunch or dinner.

The town’s distinctive medieval ambiance is reflected in its striking examples of gothic and baroque architecture, the most prominent of which has to be the Black Church with its smoke-blackened walls and looming presence over the beautiful old square in the heart of the town. All the sights worth seeing in Brasov are accessible by foot including the narrowest street in Europe and the climb up to the top of the Black Tower where the entire city unfolds before your eyes.

Includes Bella Muzica

Balea Lake and the Ice Hotel

Perched high up in Transylvania’s Fagaras Mountains at an altitude of 2,034 meters, the glacial Balea Lake is a stunning location that will take your breath away with its changing facades throughout the year.

As winter arrives and temperatures in the mountains begin to plummet, the lake gradually freezes over and its calm emerald waters are transformed into thick ice. Huge blocks of the icy lake are then cut and dragged to the location of the Ice Hotel where the construction process begins. In a matter of weeks, part of the frozen Balea Lake is transformed into a beautiful and uniquely designed hotel of ice with its very own Ice Church, Ice Restaurant and Sub Zero Ice Bar.

A stay at the Ice Hotel is truly a unique, once in a lifetime opportunity. The experience begins in style as you are transported up through the misty, snow covered mountain peaks by cable car; a trip that affords incredible panoramas of the surrounding alpine area studded with rich coniferous forests. Once you’re up on the mountain  there is a range of snow-based activities to get involved with and the Sub Zero Ice Bar is always open for a very cool beverage served in customary ice glasses.

Aside from a range of snow-based activities to get involved with, the main highlight of your stay is sure to be The Ice Hotel Dining Experience at the world’s first and only Ice Restaurant. The fairytale evening meal is set within the Ice Hotel itself with two of four courses served on plates of ice at your very own frozen table and fur-lined thrones of ice.

Although temperatures in the Ice Hotel typically waiver between -2 and +2 degrees, guests find themselves enjoying a surprisingly cosy night’s sleep, particularly those who have indulged in a nightcap before bedtime. Ice beds are covered with insulating reindeer fur then topped with mattresses for extra comfort. Bedding, further furs, and specialist sleeping bags are all provided and bathroom facilities are located nearby.

Accommodation at Balea Lake:

Includes The Ice Hotel

For those who don’t fancy sleeping in the Ice Hotel, alternative bookings can be made in the Balea Lake Chalet. Please let us know beforehand if this is what you wish to do.

The Season

The Ice Hotel season runs throughout the winter and during the initial part of the spring, with the official opening date set on Christmas Day, the 25th of December, each year. The Ice Hotel stays open to guests all the way up until the end of April after which time the warm weather sets in and the frozen structures of the hotel, church and igloos begin to melt. However, each year the Ice Hotel has been forced to close earlier and earlier as a result of global warming which is what we’ve decided not to take any bookings in April at all to avoid disappointment.

The construction of the Ice Hotel can only begin once the Balea Lake completely freezes over, which usually occurs right at the beginning of December after which point the building, sculpting and carving commences. However, the unpredictable nature of the weather has an impact on the Ice Hotel season, making it difficult for us to predict the exact date the hotel, church and igloos will be completed and the precise moment that the ice starts to melt. The season up at the Ice Hotel changes month on month, the finer details of which are outlined below. Each month is different but equally special.

December: The festive season offers a truly magical experience up at the Ice Hotel, with Christmas and New Year celebrations in full swing. The New Year’s Eve party at the Ice Hotel is particularly special complete with fireworks and bubbles when the clock strikes 12. You’ll also be the very first visitors to sleep in the ice-suites and eat at the Ice Restaurant at Christmas.

January: January is a great time to visit the Ice Hotel because the vast majority of the structures will have been built and all the ice sculptures and decorations are brand new and polished.

February: This is the prime time to visit the Ice Hotel. The Ice Church and Igloos will almost certainly have been completely constructed and the weather is usually sunny and crisp. February also plays host to Valentine’s Day on the 14th which is celebrated in style at the Ice Hotel. Romance on ice, if you will.

March: March affords visitors to the Ice Hotel almost guaranteed blue skies and sunshine. There’s still lots of snow but you get the best of both worlds. In fact, it’s not unusual to find yourself enjoying a coffee outside in a Transylvanian town’s café with the sun beating down with surprising strength onto both your face and the snow-covered streets.

The Duration & The Calendar

The Ice Hotel Experience takes place over four nights and five days and typically commences every Friday and Saturday during the season. However, the arrival and departure times of your chosen flights may well affect the exact duration of your stay. Many use the flexibility of booking their own flights to add an additional night or two (or three) in Bucharest at the beginning and/or end of the experience to make the very most of their time in Romania.

Those looking for a shorter break might find the Mini Ice Hotel Experience more appropriate as it takes place over three nights and is the perfect fit for a weekend getaway. For more information click here >

The calendar on the BOOK NOW page shows exactly when trips are available throughout the season. As well as displaying which trip dates are fully booked or available, the calendar also highlights specific dates that have been discounted or are on special offer. Click here to see available dates and rates on our calendar >

The Highlights

There are hundreds of reasons why we think you would be mad not to miss this experience, but here are a few of our personal trip highlights to help persuade you…

The Winter Wonderland Landscape: No other ice hotel can offer you the magical experience that comes from being nestled between gorgeous mountainous peaks. While other ice hotels are commonly found next to woodland or long stretches of monotonous landscape, Romania’s Ice Hotel is located over 2000m above sea level up in the Fagaras Mountains and overlooks breath-taking alpine valleys. In the winter, it is only accessible by cable car making it incredibly remote and exclusive.

The World’s Only Ice Restaurant: Home to the only Ice Restaurant in the world, the Ice Hotel Dining Experience is one of our best and brightest highlights. Diners are treated to a delicious four-course dinner with starters and dessert served on plates of ice and complimentary cocktails at the Sub Zero Ice Bar to boot. It is pure magic.

The Snow Suites & Igloos: One of our favourite things about the Ice Hotel is exploring the wonderful ice rooms and interiors of the igloos. Redesigned each winter, every single room is individual and boasts unique snow sculptures and magical mood lighting that fits in with the overall theme of the hotel. You can even spend the night in your very own private igloo.

The Ice Church: Just a stone’s throw away from the main Ice Hotel is the magical Ice Church, which plays host to white weddings, christenings and renewal of vows. From the altar and the pews to the collection box and even the organ, every sculpture in the Ice Church is made from ice with stunning intricate details and carvings. It really is something special. If you’re after your very own fairy tale wedding, do get in touch.
