THE WHITE WATER RAFTING EXPERIENCE

The Overview

Experience the thrill of white water rafting in an environment of extreme natural beauty in Montenegro. This exciting three-night adventure takes places in the north of the country where rugged, snow-capped mountains tower above lush valleys, verdant forests and impressive canyons gushing with glacial water.

Home to one of Europe’s longest and most dramatic canyons, the Tara Canyon is also the second deepest of its kind in the world after the Grand Canyon in Arizona. From May all the way through to September, the cascading waters of the Tara River transform into an adventure playground for rafting activities.

Aside from the adrenaline pumping rafting excursion you’ll also have the opportunity to test your nerve with zip-ling and even bungee jumping from the immense Tara Bridge. All of this action and adventure is perfectly balanced with time to explore serene mountain lakes in Durmitor National Park, wander around small rural villages, witness outstanding panoramas and absorbing the natural surroundings in peace and quiet at the eco-lodge camp.

A wet, wild and wonderful weekend packed full of fun for all!

The Experience

Day 1: Arrival in Podgorica where you’ll be picked up and whisked along the twists and turns of the stunning emerald-green waters of the Moraca River Valley stopping to admire the Moraca Monastery. The journey continues up towards the immense Tara Bridge, which crosses the gushing rapids of the Tara River Canyon and just happens to be Europe’s longest and deepest gorge. You can even get your adrenaline pumping with zip-lining over the canyon. Afterwards, you’ll visit the beautiful Black Lake in Durmitor National Park before driving past the rolling plains of the mountain countryside and up through the dramatic Piva Canyon over to Izalzak Ethno Village where you’ll settle in to your cosy eco-hut and enjoy some local cuisine for dinner.

Day 2: After some breakfast you’ll pile into a jeep and travel to the mountain village of Scepan Polje and the rafting starting point. You’ll be given your wet suits and some preliminary training before taking to the rapids of the Tara River up near the Bosnian border and enjoying the thrill of white water rafting for the day. After tucking into a hearty lunch overlooking the flowing river you’ll be transferred back to Izlazak Ethno Village for hot showers, some well deserved rest and relaxation and traditional mountain far for dinner.

Day 3: Day at your leisure. Choose to tour the area on a boat ride through the Piva Canyon, enjoy a hike or ramble through the countryside, visit the rural mountain village of Trsa or try your hand at some horse riding.

Day 4: Early morning transfer back to Podgorica in time for your flight home

THE WHITE WATER RAFTING EXPERIENCE

The Location

Magical Montenegro. The Black Mountain.

Home to one of Europe’s most enticing stretches of coastline, some of the most striking mountain scenery on the continent and countless other spectacular gems, Montenegro is a country of incredible beauty and diversity. Not even 300km long, this tiny country packs in an extraordinary range of diverse landscape, cultural influences and must-see destinations.

Catholic West meets Orthodox East, Montenegro’s heritage fuses centuries old influences ranging from the Ottoman to the Venetian eras with a smorgasbord of diverse architecture and culture to create an utterly evocative holiday adventure.

Montenegro’s marvelous coastline is blessed with warm sunshine, olive groves, and citrus trees, sprinkled with clusters of historic towns boasting picture-perfect Venetian and Baroque churches and palaces and decorated with handfuls of quaint white-stoned fishing villages complete with secluded pebble coves and fine sandy beaches. Wander inland, and you’re greeted with breathtaking canyons, gushing emerald-green rivers, astonishing snow-capped mountains, glacial lakes and rich forests, sprinkled here and there with traditional mountain towns and gorgeous monasteries bursting with vivid frescoes and magical icons.

Whether you choose to explore the natural wonders of the mountains and its glacial lakes or whether you prefer to bask in the glorious sunshine that warms the red-tiled houses and polished stone streets of one of the gorgeous coastal towns, you’ll realise that Montenegro has the ‘wow-factor’ in abundance.

Small but mighty, Montenegro can be divided into three distinct areas, each with its own diverse qualities: The central region made up of the capital city and other inland towns, the mountainous north with its impressive natural scenery, and the coast which includes a number of stunning seaside towns.

The Centre – Plains and Plateaus: The heart of Montenegro harbours the country’s tiny capital city, Podgorica, and boasts a remarkable natural and cultural heritage. Blessed with a beautifully mild Mediterranean climate, the central region is warm and inviting and given its superb location both in relation to the coast and the mountains offers the perfect base from which to explore the country with a kick of history.

The North – Mountains and Lakes: The north of Montenegro enjoys magnificent displays of natural beauty with every twist and turn that will leave you breathless. Vast, rugged mountains loom high above the turquoise waters of glacial lakes that wind their way through immense canyons and past snow capped peaks, fortifying lush valleys and rich forests along the way. Aside from the outstanding panoramas, the north offers so much more. Explore hidden mountain lakes and small rural villages, climb colossal mountains and rugged peaks or simply sit back and absorb your surroundings. Nature at its finest.

The Coast – Sunshine and Seaside: Blessed with blue skies, golden sunshine and stunningly beautiful stretches of coastline that extend from the tip of Croatia right down to the border with Albania, Southern Montenegro represents some of the most exquisite seaside scenery in the Adriatic. Set against an impressive backdrop of steep, vast mountains and rolling green hills, the clusters of quaint coastal towns boast rich historical and architectural treasures that hint back to civilizations past with their Venetian churches and Byzantine style buildings. Cool off in crystal-clear azure waters and stroll through the stone streets and picturesque squares of the coast’s medieval towns. Whatever you choose to do, you can’t fail to be blown away by the incredible beauty of the south.

THE WHITE WATER RAFTING EXPERIENCE

The Season

Montenegro is predominantly a summer destination with the sun-drenched Adriatic Coast and the fresh alpine landscape of the country’s interior. July and August represent peak season however the months before and afterwards are still wonderful times to visit, perhaps even more so given the drop in tourist numbers.

Montenegro’s climate varies between the coast and the mountains. The interior of the country with its national parks and beautiful mountains has a sub-alpine climate with warm summers but bitterly cold winters sometimes dipping to as low as minus 15 degrees! The best time to visit the mountains and get involved in the awesome white water rafting on offer along the Tara River is all the way from April until September when the temperatures are just right and the rapids are flowing. See below for more information.

The Months

May: The rafting season officially kicks off at the beginning of May, which is typically when the rapids are at their most exciting due to the snowmelt run off. The air is fresh and clean and the skies tend to be blue and sunny although it can get a little chilly up in the mountains and the water will be cold!

June, July & August: The temperatures start to heat up in the peak summer months and you can expect hot and sunny weather. While the coast is packed to the rafters with tourists, cruise liners and locals flocking to the ocean, the interior of the country with its mountains and national parks are much less crowded and a pleasure to spend time in. The water will have warmed under the heat of the sun and the rapids will be consistent.

September: Beautiful weather both on the coast and in the mountains and no hoards of tourists to contend with so if you’re looking to extend your stay in Montenegro you’ll be treated to lovely sunshine and some peace and quite. In terms of rafting, it is likely that the rapids won’t be as ferocious as earlier in the season however this is often dependent on the amount of rainfall the area experiences.

The Experience Duration

The White Water Rafting Experience typically takes place over three nights and three days. However, you could choose to extend your visit up to two weeks to include the beautiful Adriatic Coast. If you’d like us to customise your experience for you, just head over to the HOW tab, fill in all the details and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

The Calendar

The calendar on the right shows exactly when the White Water Rafting Experience trips are available throughout the season (April to October). As well as displaying which trip dates are fully booked or available, the calendar also highlights specific dates that have been discounted or are on special offer.

Once you’ve decided on the dates you’d like to travel, head over to the book now tab and fill out the enquiry form with all the required details. Once submitted, we will get back to you with confirmation and/or next steps within 24 hours.

We’ll get back to you as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours, answering any questions you may have and confirming availability for the experience over the dates you’ve enquired about. If that’s all good to go, we’ll hold your places for you and ask you to look into booking your return flights.

Once you’ve booked your flights please send us over the details via email including flight times, numbers and departure airports. We’ll then process your booking and send you an RBS payment link for the deposit or full balance depending on how soon you’re travelling. If your trip departs in less than 6 weeks we require full payment in order to guarantee your places on the experience, however if you are travelling in more than 6 weeks we will only take a 25% deposit at the time of booking. The outstanding balance is then taken 6 weeks before your departure date.

After your payment has been received we’ll send you confirmation of your booking along with a personalised trip itinerary, information pack and any other appropriate materials. All you need to do now is write the dates in your diary, prepare your packing list and look forward to your next adventure!
