THE MONTENEGRO EXPERIENCE

> Where does the experience take place?

Magical Montenegro. The Black Mountain.

Home to one of Europe’s most enticing stretches of coastline, some of the most striking mountain scenery on the continent and countless other spectacular gems, Montenegro is a country of incredible beauty and diversity. Not even 300km long, this tiny country packs in an extraordinary range of diverse landscape, cultural influences and must-see destinations.

Catholic West meets Orthodox East, Montenegro’s heritage fuses centuries old influences ranging from the Ottoman to the Venetian eras with a smorgasbord of diverse architecture and culture to create an utterly evocative holiday adventure.

Montenegro’s marvellous coastline is blessed with warm sunshine, olive groves, and citrus trees, sprinkled with clusters of historic towns boasting picture-perfect Venetian and Baroque churches and palaces and decorated with handfuls of quaint white-stoned fishing villages complete with secluded pebble coves and fine sandy beaches. Wander inland, and you’re greeted with breathtaking canyons, gushing emerald-green rivers, astonishing snow-capped mountains, glacial lakes and rich forests, sprinkled here and there with traditional mountain towns and gorgeous monasteries bursting with vivid frescoes and magical icons.

Small but mighty, Montenegro can be divided into three distinct areas, each with its own diverse qualities: The central region made up of the capital city and other inland towns, the mountainous north with its impressive natural scenery, and the coast which includes a number of stunning seaside towns.

Mountains

The north of Montenegro enjoys magnificent displays of natural beauty with every twist and turn that will leave you breathless. Vast, rugged mountains loom high above the turquoise waters of glacial lakes that wind their way through immense canyons and past snow capped peaks, fortifying lush valleys and rich forests along the way. Aside from the outstanding panoramas, the north offers so much more. Explore hidden mountain lakes and small rural villages, climb colossal mountains and rugged peaks or simply sit back and absorb your surroundings. Nature at its finest.

Coast

Blessed with blue skies, golden sunshine and stunningly beautiful stretches of coastline that extend from the tip of Croatia right down to the border with Albania, Montenegro’s coast represents some of the most exquisite seaside scenery in the Adriatic. Set against an impressive backdrop of steep, vast mountains and rolling green hills, the clusters of quaint coastal towns boast rich historical and architectural treasures that hint back to civilizations past with their Venetian churches and Byzantine style buildings. Cool off in crystal-clear azure waters and stroll through the stone streets and picturesque squares of the coast’s medieval towns. Whatever you choose to do, you can’t fail to be blown away by the incredible beauty of the south.

THE MONTENEGRO EXPERIENCE

> When does the experience run?

May to October.

The climate varies between the coast and the mountains. Along the Adriatic, coastal Montenegro enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate with very warm summers and mild winters. The interior of the country however including the mountains has a sub-alpine climate with warm summers but bitterly cold winters sometimes dipping to as low as minus 15 degrees! The mountains are best visited all the way from April until September when the temperatures are just right for indulging in outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing and rafting. See below for more information.

> When is the best time to travel?

Spring (May)

The air is fresh and clean and the skies are blue and sunny and the wildflowers are out in full force! The only drawback in travelling to Montenegro in springtime is the limitation on outdoor activities such as rafting, which only kicks off towards the end of May. The coast usually enjoys sunny weather in May with clear skies and fresh air.

Summer (June, July & August)

Summer is high season for tourists but only on the coast where the weather is hot and sunny. The interior of the country with its mountains, lakes and national parks is absolutely beautiful at this time of year.

Autumn (September & October)

A lovely time to visit Montenegro. It can get a little chilly but the weather normally behaves itself and most visitors have left by now leaving you to enjoy the mountains in peace. The later on in the season and depending on when winter sets in each year, there may be some areas that are inaccessible. Beautiful weather on the coast especially in September and no hoards of tourists to contend with!

> When are the experience dates?

[One Half]

The calendar on the right shows exactly when the Montenegro Experience trips are available throughout the season. As well as displaying which trip dates are fully booked or available, the calendar also highlights specific dates that have been discounted or are on special offer.

Once you’ve decided on the dates you’d like to travel, head over to the HOW tab and fill out the enquiry form with all the required details. Once submitted, we will get back to you with confirmation and/or next steps within 24 hours.

> Why did others love this experience?

Our client testimonials.

‘This place is astonishing. We expected exactly none of what we are actually seeing or experiencing. It is spectacular, first world, and practically empty, at least out here near the national park.  We had wifi at the “ethnic” farm lunch spot, better than Barcelona.  Prices for lunch unexpectedly affordable. Our driver has been first rate. The infrastructure is more like Switzerland and the vast expanses are like, well, almost no place in Europe or elsewhere.  Stunning. Well done, Marion and James’ – Allyn & Carol, September 2013 (3rd UTP Experience)
