The Overview

This is a ski break with a difference! Not only will you get to enjoy a few snow-packed days on the slopes of Romania’s premier ski resort in Poiana Brasov, and visit the beautiful medieval town of Brasov, but you’ll also get the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend the night at up Ice Hotel.

After a night in the vibrant capital city of Bucharest, you’ll be whisked away into the heart rural Romania through the plains of the Transylvanian countryside where you’ll visit the magnificent Peles Castle, and explore the infamous would-be residence of Count Dracula, the forbidding Bran Castle. In Brasov, enjoy a leisurely stroll around charming cobbled streets, stopping to warm up in one of the town’s bohemian cafes dotted along snow-dusted alleyways off the main square. Or choose to unravel history on an informative walking tour taking in the Black Church and even the narrowest street in Europe!

The next morning, drift through the clouds as you ascend the Faragas Mountains by cable car up to the magical Ice Hotel past snow-capped peaks and frosty forestland. Once you’ve chosen your Snow Suite and explored the fairytale hotel of ice, get your heart racing with some snow-activities like sledging and snowmobiling or simply kick back with a hot drink and just enjoy the sunshine, snow and scenery. In the evening, brace yourselves for dinner ‘on ice’ with a four-course meal at the world’s first and only Ice Restaurant complete with ice plates, frozen tables and frosty, fur-lined chairs before enjoying an evening at the Sub Zero Ice Bar then tucking yourselves into cosy sleeping bags before braving the night in your ice-suite.

The Location

Poiana Brasov Ski Resort

Eight miles outside Brasov and perched 1,200m above sea level within the dramatic Postavaru Massif, lies the small alpine town of Poiana Brasov. The rich coniferous forests and stunning mountain peaks steeped in fresh, open air make this location a beautiful natural setting for outdoor types and mountain lovers alike. As Romania’s premier ski resort, Poiana Brasov is also the go-to destination for skiers and snowboarders who take to the slopes for a few days of snow sports activity.

With over 13,000m of runs, the skiing is suitable for all levels of experience and ski equipment can be rented in advance along with ski passes. See below for more details. Despite the range of pistes, advanced skiers may find the number of challenging slopes limited and might want to engage in other activities aside from skiing. For absolute beginners, it is possible to arrange lessons with English and German speaking ski instructors and for those who prefer not to ski,  a ride in a horse drawn sleigh is the perfect way to admire the winter panoramas. Advanced skiers may find the number of more challenging slopes to be limited.

The Ice Hotel

Nestled between the icy peaks of the Fagaras Mountains and veiled by clouds, the remote Ice Hotel stands 2000m above sea level and can only be accessed via cable car. Each winter, once the Balea Lake freezes over, the locals cut and drag blocks of the icy lake to the location of the hotel, which is set against a magnificent backdrop. Hand carved by local craftsmen using traditional techniques, the frozen Balea Lake is transformed into the beautifully intricate structures of the Ice Hotel and its magical Ice Church. With individually sculptured rooms of ice, each and every corner of the Ice Hotel is stunningly unique and is re-designed every winter.

A stay at the Ice Hotel is truly a unique, once in a lifetime opportunity. The experience begins in style as you are transported up through the misty, snow covered mountain peaks by cable car; a trip that affords incredible panoramas of the surrounding alpine area studded with rich coniferous forests. Once you’re up on the mountain  there is a range of snow-based activities to get involved with and the Sub Zero Ice Bar is always open for a very cool beverage served in customary ice glasses.

Aside from a range of snow-based activities to get involved with, the main highlight of your stay is sure to be The Ice Hotel Dining Experience at the world’s first and only Ice Restaurant. The fairytale evening meal is set within the Ice Hotel itself with two of four courses served on plates of ice at your very own frozen table and fur-lined thrones of ice.

Although temperatures in the Ice Hotel typically waiver between -2 and +2 degrees, guests find themselves enjoying a surprisingly cosy night’s sleep, particularly those who have indulged in a nightcap before bed. Ice beds are covered with insulating reindeer fur then topped with mattresses for extra comfort. Bedding, further furs, and specialist sleeping bags are all provided and bathroom facilities are located nearby.

Romania is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, a country so full of surprises it will make you wonder why you hadn’t thought to visit before. The variation and contrast is staggering, from its untouched traditional rural countryside and its abundance of wildlife in Transylvania to the fishing villages and bird reservations of the Danube Delta. Not to be missed is Romania’s fast paced capital, Bucharest, with its eclectic mix of stunning European architecture and crumbling remnants of its communist past. Romania has far more to offer than Dracula, gypsies and the Cheeky Girls!

Famed for its connections with Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula, Transylvania offers so much more than old ghost stories. With beautiful landscapes teaming with nature and medieval Saxon towns rich in history and culture, travelling to Transylvania is a bit like stepping into the past, where time seems to slow down and age-old tradition unravels itself. The dramatic Carpathan Mountains are home to a whopping 40% of Europe’s last strong and healthy populations of the Brown bear, as well as a third of the continents elusive predators – wolf and lynx. The Saxon towns of Brasov, Sibiu and Sighisoara are perfectly preserved and boast charming cobbled streets and rainbow coloured houses with traditional roofs.

The Season

The Ice Hotel season runs throughout the winter and during the initial part of the spring, with the official opening date set on Christmas Day, the 25th of December, each year. The Ice Hotel stays open to guests all the way up until the end of April after which time the warm weather sets in and the frozen structures of the hotel, church and igloos begin to melt. However, as the altitude of Romania’s ski resort is far lower than 2,000m, the season for skiing only takes places from January to mid March where temperatures average -4 degrees in the mountains and snow cover ranges between 50 to 60cm.

The construction of the Ice Hotel can only begin once the Balea Lake completely freezes over, which usually occurs right at the beginning of December after which point the building, sculpting and carving commences. However, the unpredictable nature of the weather and the effects of global warming continue to have an impact on the Ice Hotel season, making it difficult for us to predict the exact date the hotel, church and igloos will be completed and the precise moment that the ice starts to melt. This also has an affect on the levels of snow on the slopes in Poiana Brasov which can be difficult to predict. There are snow canons up and running however, so you’d be unlucky not to get a decent amount of snow for skiing.

If you’re more interested in extreme and off-piste skiing, this can be done up at the location of the Ice Hotel but is only recommended for professional skiers and snowboarders. As such, you may well be better off opting for the Ice Hotel Experience.

January: January is a great time to visit the Ice Hotel because the vast majority of the structures will have been built and all the ice sculptures and decorations are brand new and polished. The weather is tends to be pretty chilly and there should be plenty of snow.

February: This is the prime time to visit the Ice Hotel and the best time to hit the slopes. The Ice Church and Igloos will almost certainly have been completely constructed and the weather is usually sunny and crisp. Heavy snowfall is common too, so you’ll get lots of decent snow for skiing.

March: March means almost guaranteed blue skies and sunshine. There’s still lots of snow but you get the best of both worlds. In fact, it’s not unusual to find yourself enjoying a coffee outside in a Transylvanian town’s café with the sun beating down with surprising strength onto both your face and the snow-covered streets. Don’t forget your suncream!

The Duration & The Calendar

The Ice Hotel Ski Experience takes place over seven nights and eight days and typically commences every Friday and Saturday during the season. However, the arrival and departure times of your chosen flights may well affect the exact duration of your stay. Many use the flexibility of booking their own flights to add an additional night or two (or three) in Bucharest at the beginning and/or end of the experience to make the very most of their time in Romania.

The calendar on the BOOK NOW page shows exactly when trips are available throughout the season. As well as displaying which trip dates are fully booked or available, the calendar also highlights specific dates that have been discounted or are on special offer. Click here to see available dates and rates on our calendar >

The Highlights

There are hundreds of reasons why we think you would be mad to miss this experience, but here are a few of our personal trip highlights to help persuade you…

The Winter Wonderland Landscape: No other ice hotel can offer you the magical experience that comes from being nestled between gorgeous mountainous peaks. While other ice hotels are commonly found next to woodland or long stretches of monotonous landscape, Romania’s Ice Hotel is located over 2000m above sea level up in the Fagaras Mountains and overlooks breath-taking alpine valleys. In the winter, it is only accessible by cable car making it incredibly remote and exclusive.

The World’s Only Ice Restaurant: Home to the only Ice Restaurant in the world, the Ice Hotel Dining Experience is one of our best and brightest highlights. Diners are treated to a delicious four-course dinner with starters and dessert served on plates of ice and complimentary cocktails at the Sub Zero Ice Bar to boot. It is pure magic.

The Snow Suites & Igloos: One of our favourite things about the Ice Hotel is exploring the wonderful ice rooms and interiors of the igloos. Redesigned each winter, every single room is individual and boasts unique snow sculptures and magical mood lighting that fit in with the overall theme of the hotel. The most difficult part is trying to choose which one you’ll sleep in! You can even spend the night in your very own private igloo.

The Ice Church: Just a stone’s throw away from the main Ice Hotel is the magical Ice Church, which plays host to white weddings, christenings and vowel renewals. From the altar and the pews to the collection box and even the organ, every sculpture in the Ice Church is made from ice with stunning intricate details and carvings. It really is something special. If you’re after your very own fairy tale wedding, do have a look at The Ice Hotel Wedding Experience and get in touch.
