WHERE YOU'RE GOING
There aren't many European countries in which you can learn more about the history of the continent than Bosnia and Herzegovina. You will see exactly how the world's different cultures and influences molded the small nations and vice versa. While Ottomans, Austro-Hungarians, Romans, and other world forces shaped the amazing combination of architecture, culture, and customs, the small Balkan country was the initial spark for the WWI through the assassination of the Austrian archduke. And while museums, churches, and mosques might be the highlights of the trip, the nature lovers will thoroughly enjoy Kravice waterfall and the beautiful setting of Blagaj Tekija monastery.

The currency used in BiH is the Convertible Mark, often abbreviated as BAM or KM. In Croatia for your last day, the currency is Kuna- HRK
The easiest option is to head to a cash machine once you’ve touched down in Bosnia and Herzegovina to withdraw funds. There are ATMs in most places you’re staying in so access shouldn’t be a problem. If you have cash, you will find plenty of exchange points in the old town. Your guide will point you in the right direction to ensure you get the best rates.
In Croatia, vast majority of businesses accept credit/debit cards. As for BiH, well-established restaurants will accept credit/debit cards too, while smaller cafes, antique shops, and similar will only take local cash. We recommend having some cash on you available.
In Dubrovnik, you'll need around £15-20 for a meal and a drink, while in Bosnia and Herzegovina a meal goes for around £8-10 per person. Dubrovnik, being a well-established tourist destination, means that souvenirs, museums, and cable car rides will cost from £5 to £20. In Mostar and Sarajevo, all of that will be around three times cheaper, and the majority of sights where you pay the entry fee is already part of the itinerary so the fees are included.
The estimated total budget for the whole trip is between £140 and £170 per person, of course depending on what type of venues you choose to eat at, and the type of extra activities you want to do.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has a continental climate with warm springs and summers, the peak summer month being August when the temperature goes up to 30-odd degrees Celsius. Dubrovnik has a Mediterranean climate so it will be around 35-40 degrees Celsius. There are rain showers in both countries, however, so you might want to add a piece of clothing or two to be ready for that as well, especially in April/early May, and late September/October.
You can always contact the UTP team on +44 207 101 4061 or info@untravelledpaths.com. Before you travel, you will also receive a personalized itinerary with the contact details of the local manager in the Balkans should there be any problems. Your guide will be on hand throughout the trip as well, so you're in safe hands.
Our digital booklet, which you will receive before travel, contains all the information you need about optional activities. Simply drop us an email letting us know what you'd like to do during your trip, and we'll take care of the rest. Please note that the payment for the optional activities will be taken locally in cash.
It is safe. And although there are still a few land mine zones, they are off-limits, well secured, and properly warned. Your local guides will know about them so do liaise with them if you want to wander off the beaten track. Pick-pocketing and similar crimes are not too much of a problem, if at all, in both of these countries.
